About NSTF Awards
Overview
NSTF Awards honours and Celebrates Outstanding Contributions to Science, Engineering, Technology and Innovation (SETI)
These awards are unique in SA, recognising the outstanding contributions of individuals and groups of individuals to SETI and therefore affords an opportunity for recognition and celebration to all practising scientists, engineers and technologists across the system of innovation, including, for example, teachers and students in mathematics, science and technology.
Background
The NSTF Awards were established
in 1998. This was just three years
after the founding of the National
Science and Technology Forum
(NSTF), a uniquely South African
forum of science, engineering,
technology and innovation (SETI)
organisations, which has the following salient features:
- Seeking to influence policy
formulation and delivery in South
Africa
- Playing a powerful consultative
and lobbying role in SETI policy
matters, and
- Recognising excellence in Science,
Engineering and Technology
The NSTF Awards, whose patron
is the Minister of the Department of
Science and Technology, have grown
to be the most prestigious SETI
awards in South Africa. The previous
winners of these Awards are widely
recognised as worthy recipients.
Objectives
These prestidious awards celebrate, acknowledge
and promote excellence in the South
African Research and Development
(R&D) community by cross- cutting
sectors, levels, gender, and race
while recognising both individuals and
teams.
These Awards celebrate scientific
research that is professional,
innovative, forward looking and
relevant to both South Africa and the
rest of the world.
The Awards recognise and celebrate
excellence in research in order to
encourage the involvement and
participation of SETI organisations
in research while raising awareness in the general public about local
research and its relevance.
The NSTF Awards have been
addressing government R&D targets
and policy by involving business,
drawing attention to scarce skills,
profiling role models and facilitating
knowledge transfer for learners and
students to pursue careers in SETI.
Adjudication panel
An adjudication panel of independent judges representing all sectors within the NSTF will review the nominations to decide on the finalists, and the winners who are to be announced, and presented with the prestigious, specially designed trophies, at the Gala Dinner scheduled for the month of May every year. All finalists will be recognised with a certificate at a NSTF Plenary meeting scheduled around April every year.
